BUCKING TREND, CONSTRUCTION COMPANY HIRES MORE FULL-TIME EMPLOYEES, ACHIEVES EMPLOYEE TURNOVER RATE OF 6.3%

CARNEGIE, PA (PittsburghNewsWire.com) — Pittsburgh area Contractor see benefits of investing in employees at a time when many construction companies see their workers as disposable and easily replaceable.

Southwestern Pennsylvania has seen a steady loss of stable, full-time, middle class jobs for non-college educated men, and this loss has had negative consequences on families and communities. Short term, seasonal work is readily available in construction, but steady, stable jobs are harder to find. The US Department of Labor reports that nationally, the employee turnover in the construction industry averaged over 60% in 2016.

With an unheard of turnover rate of 6.3% in 2016, Shannon Staley demonstrates an unusually strong commitment to its tradesmen and laborers.  Eighty percent of its employees are full-time, and part-time employees are all by choice to accommodate school and family commitments. The firm offers medical, dental, 401k, paid vacation and time off to all full-time employees, which is not typical in the industry.

Steve Daniele, the CEO states, “We used to use a lot of subcontractors and seasonal labor, but our thinking changed when we realized that we are not selling construction labor, specific construction skills, or even finished projects, but trust. Our tradesmen interact with our clients daily. That means that their character and attitude is just as important as their skill set.”

While many businesses are trying to lower the risk and cost of employees by outsourcing when possible, Steve ramped up his roster of full-time employees, allowing for more rigorously vetting.  He invested in developing and empowering his employees, and as a result Shannon Staley and Sons has sustained 900% growth in the last 3 years.

Shannon Staley and Sons offers not just a job, but a career path for construction laborers, developing and promoting from within. Twenty-five percent of management positions are currently filled by former construction laborers, including a Division Manager who now oversees over 30 staff members.

Matt Hallam, a carpenter who was promoted to Field Coordinator in the last year explains the difference, “When I started working for Shannon Staley and Sons, I was 40 years old and had all but given up on finding a fulfilling career. Every new job always seemed to be no better than the last. This company’s confidence in me has inspired me to be better than ever.”

Sustained effort, active planning year-round, and investments in long term partnerships with builders allows Steve to keep his workforce active in the winter months, when layoffs in construction are the norm.
