WEXFORD, PA (PittsburghNewsWire.com) — Pennsylvania Distance Learning Charter School Game Design Club wins two national first place titles.
Katie Devlin, 7th grade social studies teacher at PDLCS, applied for the Professional Development Grant through the Sprout Foundation and was first denied due to the misconception that PDLCS was a private school. Devlin fought to correct that misconception and as a result PDLCS was chosen to participate in the Games for Change Student Challenge.
The purpose of Games for Change is to teach students how to design games that make a difference. Devlin and her students spent the school year learning how to create and design games that focused on important issues like climate change, immigrant voices, and future communities. The National Challenge Awards Ceremony took place on Saturday, June 10, 2017, with schools coming from Pittsburgh, New York City, and Dallas. PDLCS students received two first place awards and one honorable mention for the three games that they submitted.
“I am so grateful to the Sprout Foundation for allowing a small cyber charter school like ours to finally have the opportunity to compete on an even playing field and show that our students deserve the very best that education has to offer,” said Devlin.
