DECEMBER 10 IS INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS DAY:
PITTSBURGH ORGANIZERS CALL FOR RACIAL AND ECONOMIC JUSTICE
International Human Rights Day Press Conference & Human Rights Caroling

Pittsburgh, PA (PittsburghNewsWire.com)
Wednesday, December 10, 11:00 AM
Hill House Association, 1835 Centre Avenue
Pittsburgh, PA 15219
(Livestream www.pghrights.org).

On Human Rights Day (December 10, 2014), Pittsburgh will join millions of people around the world who are demanding change and reclaiming their basic human rights. This year, people around the country are lifting their voices to show that “Black lives matter!” This press conference highlights the many areas of policy where work is needed to address the glaring racial injustices that are at the basis of the police violence that has triggered popular outrage.

Press Conference speakers will identify key areas where change is needed to further human rights in our city—primarily in regard to racial and economic justice. These areas will be a major focus of the Human Rights City Alliance work in the coming year. Speakers include: Julia Johnson, Pittsburgh for Justice; Miguel Sague, Council of Three Rivers American Indian Center; Carl Redwood, Hill District Consensus Group; Carmen Alexander, New Voices Pittsburgh; Courtney Clemm, Pittsburgh Student Activist Coalition; Workers from the “Fight for Fifteen”; and an immigrant worker from UNITE HERE.

The Alliance will also announce the release of its Human Rights City Action Plan, which identifies concrete changes needed to make Pittsburgh a true Human Rights City. Members of the group will deliver the Action Plan to the Mayor and City Council members following the press conference.

The “Raging Grannies” will open the event, and following the press conference, activists mobilizing to resist police brutality and racial profiling will lead a round of human rights caroling.

The Human Rights City Alliance is working to unite groups around our city and region to strengthen our demands for dignity and justice. We want our elected officials to prioritize human rights over the voices of corporate elites which have, for too long, held sway over our political process. For details about the Human Rights City Alliance and a list of some of the participating organizations see www.pghrights.org
