NEW SUN RISING INTRODUCES LAUNCH MILLVALE
An incubation program for social enterprises

PITTSBURGH, PA (PittsburghNewsWire.com) — New Sun Rising selects Millvale as the first community chosen to host a novel incubation program for social enterprises in Pittsburgh. Launch MODE, an intensive 12-month program provides project owners with a learning curriculum, direct support, industry expertise, impact fundraising, and strategic development of their business model. Project owners with solutions in the food system can apply for residency in the Launch Millvale: Food Enterprise Incubator through August 9, 2015.

Millvale Borough Development Corporation President, Tina Walker said, “There has been a lack of local fresh food producers and businesses in neighborhoods such as Millvale for far too long. Thanks to the Millvale Borough Development Corporation teaming up with NSR, that void will be changing in the very near future.  NSR has begun the process by initiating their food enterprise incubator program in Millvale to give those food businesses and producers a fighting chance at success…including Millvale’s own fresh food hub that is anticipated to open sometime this fall.”

The first Pittsburgh neighborhood to be chosen to host a New Sun Rising Launch MODE incubator, Millvale has a unified vision for becoming a fresh food hub. The EcoDistricts community planning process brought together citizens, neighborhood organizations, businesses, and local government to build the community’s capacity to catalyze renewal.

New Sun Rising Executive Director Scott Wolovich said, “We’re looking for fresh ideas in all areas of the food system: production, delivery, education, justice, and advocacy. Growth of these enterprises and nonprofits are essential to neighborhood vitality. By focusing on financially sustainable models and greater local impact, we’re helping leaders and communities succeed.”

Strategic guidance in the program will come from NSR’s team including food expert Leah Lizarondo of Brazen Kitchen, who shares that “local food enterprises play a big role in economic development. They are a source of income, employment and jobs to a community. And because everyone loves food, they become anchors to community residents and points of destination for visitors. I’m very excited to work with food entrepreneurs to help get their ventures off the ground and develop the food hub in Millvale.”

Project leaders and those interested in learning more about starting an enterprise or innovative nonprofit in the food system are encouraged to apply for Launch Millvale: Food Enterprise Incubator through August 9.  Up to 10 project owners in any stage of development from concept to early implementation will be granted residency in the program, which begins in late August. Information sessions will be held on Wednesday, July 8th and Wednesday, July 22nd from 3:30 to 5:30pm at Farm Truck Foods mobile grocer in Millvale.

New Sun Rising MODE programs are made possible through the generous support of the Henry L. Hillman Foundation, Neighborhood Allies, and The Pittsburgh Foundation.

The deadline to apply for Launch Millvale: Food Enterprise Incubator is August 9. For more information and to apply, please visit http://www.newsunrising.org/launch-millvale
