RIVERS OF STEEL UNVEILS NEW BRAND
Change reflects evolution of programming and a new era for the organization.

PITTSBURGH, PA (PittsburghNewsWire.com) — The Rivers of Steel Heritage Corporation, managers of the eight-county Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area and attractions including the Carrie Blast Furnaces National Historic Landmark, the Explorer riverboat, and other regional National Historic Landmarks, announced the launch of its new brand name and identity. The organization will now simply be known as Rivers of Steel.  A new logo was unveiled and a new website is in development.

The change was precipitated by the recent evolution of Rivers of Steel’s programming and audience reach. Branching beyond traditional methods of engaging the public in heritage tourism, the addition of an array of science- and arts-based programs has underscored the need to update the organization’s brand identity to better reflect the scope of its work.
“With the evolution of Rivers of Steel into tourism, arts, education and economic development our programming has grown, as has our reach into the region and the communities with which we work,” said August Carlino, president and CEO of Rivers of Steel. “Our new brand encompasses the broader reach of our efforts, but our focus remains on the reverence to our region’s nationally-significant industrial and cultural heritage.”
The new logo and corresponding visual identity were created by Little Kelpie, designed to fit the needs of 21st-century applications. The brand mark symbolically incorporates an I-beam and a river to create an abstract “R.” It replaces the WPA-inspired “logo man” formerly used to identify both the Rivers of Steel Heritage Corporation and the Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area. It will also replace a suite of program logos, including the RiverQuest and Rivers of Steel Arts marks.
The adoption of the simplified Rivers of Steel name also reduces the confusion related to the similar names of the non-profit managing entity and its heritage area program.
As part of the new branding, Rivers of Steel is currently in the process of creating a new mobile-responsive website, scheduled to launch before the Rivers of Steel attractions open for the 2018 season.
In order to give more context to the above information – and to convey these changes to the Rivers of Steel stakeholders – a narrative video was created (https://youtu.be/xiu9cd_A9KY). It was shared with core audiences on New Year’s Day.
