TIME CAPSULE, BOOK LAUNCH & CELEBRATION PARTY
TO MARK 100 YEARS
TO MARK 100 YEARS
American Society of Civil Engineering Celebrating Historic Milestone in Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH, PA (PittsburghNewsWire.com) — Since its founding in 1918, the Pittsburgh Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) has been recognized for its outstanding achievements in diversity and inclusion, community service, volunteer events, student outreach, and advocacy for civil engineers. On Saturday, September 22, 2018 at 5:30 pm the ASCE Pittsburgh Section is hosting its Centennial Celebration party at the Hotel Monaco in Downtown Pittsburgh. The fete will feature music by the Pittsburgh’s Boilermaker Jazz Band, succulent food stations from The Commoner, and the 100th Anniversary book unveiling among other activities. And, of course, there will be a birthday cake specially made by Prantl’s Bakery. For event tickets and further details, please visit www.asce-pgh.org/event-2683986.
As a special feature for this historic milestone, during the event the Section’s 100th Celebration Committee will be capturing outstanding mementos of time in the “ASCE Pittsburgh Section Centennial Time Capsule.” ASCE members will donate photos, articles, small instruments or devices, videos, books, letters to the future leadership of ASCE, and engineering “doodads or trinkets”. A group photo will be included in the time capsule and, after the event, a blog article will be posted on the Section website with descriptions and photographs of the items. The capsule will reside in the basement of the Engineer’s Society of Western Pennsylvania (ESWP) to be re-opened at the 200th ASCE Pittsburgh Section Celebration in 2118.
Partygoers will also have the opportunity to take home the new centennial publication, “Engineering Pittsburgh: A History of Roads, Rails, Canals, Bridges & More,” to be formally unveiled during the Celebration. Written by local civil engineers and professionals, the book highlights some of Pittsburgh’s and southwestern Pennsylvania’s engineering triumphs and feats. Did you know that Emerald Park was built from a Native American trail that once traversed “Coal Hill” the former name of Mount Washington and Duquesne Heights? Do you know how many children donated dimes for the construction of the Cathedral of Learning? Find out at www.asce-pgh.org/100th.
The Pittsburgh Section of ASCE has nearly 1,700 members, represents engineering and construction interests across western PA, and hosts over 50 local events per year including Engineers Week in February. Its Younger Member Forum inspires and informs the newest members of the profession and its five technical institutes produce seminars for members to build and maintain their technical and professional skills while earning Professional Development Hours.
