PITTSBURGH BROTHERS BRING HOME THE PRESTIGIOUS CAPUTO CUP AWARD AT NORTH AMERICA’S LARGEST PIZZA COMPETITION
ATLANTIC CITY, NJ (PittsburghNewsWire.com) — Who makes the best pizza in the world? Caputo Cup crowns Best Pizzaiolo to, Michael Mercurio, who took first place in the Caputo Cup Neapolitan Style division and Joe Mercurio, who took second place in the Caputo Cup Gluten Free division. Traditionally held in Naples, Italy, the Caputo Cup was hosted stateside where pizza powerhouses gathered in Atlantic City, NJ on October 3rd and 4th to compete in the Fourth Annual USA Caputo Cup Pizza Competition. The Mercurio brothers are owners of the Mercurio’s Gelato & Pizza restaurant in Shadyside, 5523 Walnut Street, Pittsburgh.
Sponsored by Antimo Caputo Flour, pizza makers from throughout the United States baked off in front of attendees and their pizzas were judged anonymously by a panel of pizza experts. Competitors had to bring their own ingredients and then assemble their pizzas in view of the audience. This annual pizza-making competition had nearly 30 contestants in each of the four divisions: Traditional, Non-Traditional, Pizza Napoletana/STG and Gluten-Free.
“The secret to a great pizza is the quality of the products and the passion that it takes to make it,” says Michael Mercurio, “you have to want to make great pizza.”
As for Joe Mercurio, “It is a really big deal for myself coming from where we started with gluten-free pizza. We took nearly three years to develop a crust to be able to offer a true Neapolitan style pizza to the gluten-free community.”
Mercurio’s Gelato & Pizza restaurant in Shadyside will be celebrating the double victory on Sunday, October 14th from 3:00pm to 9:00pm. Community members are invited to come and meet the Pizzaioli, get their pictures taken with the Caputo Cup, and enjoy our party specials including samples of our gluten-free pizza.
