Attorney Shares Story of Bipolar Diagnosis in Book Aimed at Two Audiences
ATTORNEY SHARES STORY OF BIPOLAR DIAGNOSIS IN BOOK AIMED AT TWO AUDIENCES
PITTSBURGH, PA, April 13, 2022, (PittsburghNewsWire.com) — John P. Powers’ No Matter the Chaos written for both the diagnosed and the people who support them – ahead of Mental Health Awareness Month.
In 2009, during John’s first year of law school, he was committed to a psychiatric ward of a hospital on two separate occasions and diagnosed as having bipolar disorder. He had no idea what those words meant. He had no idea why he had to take six different psychotropic medications, when only a few weeks earlier he wasn’t taking any.
Over the last thirteen years, John has learned a lot about his condition, how to manage it, how to use it as a tool, and how to not let it prevent him from leading a wonderfully productive life. He decided to write about his experiences, so that those who are similarly diagnosed might feel less alone and have hope. In No Matter the Chaos, he shares the ugly parts of his story, as well as the lessons he learned that allowed him to thrive as an attorney.
“My hope is that by sharing my story and the lessons I’ve learned with you, this book can bring you a little comfort knowing that you are not alone, no matter how isolated you may be in your thinking. That you’re not now, nor ever will be in the future, crazy. And that with patience, practice, and after getting the right help, you can regain control of your mind and live any type of life you want to live,” Powers said. Speaking to the supporters – family, friends, and medical professionals – he went on to say, “My goal is for the stories and lessons inside this book to give you both insight and a better understanding of what mania and depression feel like, so that you will know how to support your loved one.”
Throughout the book, John goes back and forth between speaking to those who have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, as well as their support networks. He talks about the benefits of medications, therapy, and God in learning to thrive with a mental health condition. He shares why he does not feel sorry for himself one bit, and why he views adversity as opportunity. “Courageous and candid writing that presents a glimpse into the Bipolar experience while offering insight woven with hope. This book has the power to let people know they are not alone and help them understand themselves or their loved ones better.” – Katelyn Elliott, Licensed Professional Counselor, NCC, LPC
