STEEL CHEF COOK-OFF COMPETITION TO TAKE PLACE ON MARCH 27, 2023

MCKEES ROCKS, PA, March 13, 2023 (PittsburghNewsWire.com) — Focus On Renewal Sto-Rox Neighborhood Corporation (FOR) announced today that its Steel Chef Program will host its third Steel Chef Cook-Off Competition that will take place at the Baverso Theater in the Father Ryan Arts Center at 420 Chartiers Avenue, McKees Rocks, PA 15136 on Monday, March 27, 2023 from 5:00pm to 8:30pm.

The Steel Chef Program is a free immersive ten-week culinary arts workshop that culminates with a high-caliber live cooking competition.  The goal of Steel Chef is to provide teens with the tools and education they need to prepare healthier foods while simultaneously teaching them valuable skills required to work in restaurant kitchens and give them exposure to careers in the restaurant industry.  Over the past several weeks, a different local chef has been teaching the students a particular skill and then the students and chefs create a meal together showcasing that skill.

This year, we have nine teaching chefs from the following organizations: Chef Natalie Diecas (Everyday’s a Sunday Cafe), Chef Jason Taylor (Pita My Schwarma), Chef Neil Blazen (Driftwood Oven), Chef Kay Stewart (House of Soul Catering), Chef Keyla Cook (Casa Brasil), Chef Zach Mitcham (Dee Jay’s BBQ), Chef Andy Allen (Driftwood Oven), Chef Mark Snyder (Cook 2 Eat 2 Live) and Chef Donato Coluccio (Sage Hospitality Group). Chefs Natalie, Zach and Andy will be the Mentor Chefs onstage with the teams during the Cook-Off. Local Producer and Documentarian Rick Sebak along with Chefs Keyla and Mark will be our Competition Judges. Tickets to the event are on sale now at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/545361068637 or on FOR’s website at www.forstorox.org.

Jenifer Davison, Project Manager of Steel Chef, commented: “The importance of Steel Chef is for teenagers to gain the knowledge to create accessible meals with a focus on workforce development so that they can go on to become employed in the restaurant industry.  We are very fortunate to have nine talented local chefs instructing the students and offering them the skills necessary to continue cooking for their friends, families and the community.  Our students can’t wait to showcase their skills!”

All ten high school students who are participating this year are from Sto-Rox High School.  Due to the support of our sponsors and the community, previous Steel Chef Cook-Out Competitions have been sold out.
