PEOPLES OAKLAND ANNOUNCES 50TH ANNIVERSARY AWARDS GALA

PITTSBURGH, PA, Sept 20, 2024 (PittsburghNewsWire.com) — Peoples Oakland, a dedicated nonprofit organization committed to supporting individuals recovering from serious mental illness and co-occurring disorders, is thrilled to announce its upcoming 50th Anniversary Awards Gala. This milestone event will celebrate five decades of unwavering commitment to improving lives and fostering hope within the community.

Founded in 1974, Peoples Oakland was established in response to the crisis faced by individuals transitioning from long-term inpatient psychiatric care following statewide deinstitutionalization mandates. Many individuals with chronic severe mental illness were released into the community with minimal support and social connections. Peoples Oakland organized these former state hospital patients into a membership group, providing guided learning opportunities, socialization, and support to advocate for their needs. Today, Peoples Oakland continues to lead in offering comprehensive recovery-based psychiatric and social rehabilitation services for adults with severe and persistent mental illness. Our services include therapeutic and counseling support and social support through both in-house activities (art, music, meditation, fitness, and more) and off-site events (camping, field trips, bowling, etc.).
The gala will be held on Friday, October 4, 2024, at the Courtyard by Marriott Pittsburgh University Center in Oakland from 6 PM to 9 PM. The evening will commence with a delightful buffet and cash bar, followed by a special awards ceremony in honor of Sandra L. Phillips, the late founding Executive Director of Peoples Oakland. The 2024 Sandra L. Phillips Awards will recognize the exceptional contributions of the Multicultural Outreach and Education (MOE) Co-founders: Elise Barr, Delores Burgess, Wilma Sirmons, and Willina Walker. Their tireless efforts have significantly advanced mental health outreach and advocacy within our community.
Following the awards, guests will enjoy live entertainment by the talented singer/songwriter Jamie Kunning, promising an inspiring and memorable conclusion to the evening.
“Marking 50 years of service, we celebrate a legacy of member-driven care—programs designed by and for those we serve,” said Lezetta L. Cox, Executive Director of Peoples Oakland. “This half-century of dedication reflects our profound commitment to empowering individuals, honoring their voices, and fostering a future where every person finds strength, support, and self-determination. We are honored to celebrate this significant milestone and recognize the exceptional individuals who have furthered our mission.
Tickets for the gala are available for $100 per person, and sponsorship opportunities are also available.
