OKTOBERFEST, SEPTEMBER 20-22 & 27-29
“Attendance last year was our highest ever at Penn’s Oktoberfest, and we’re looking forward to topping that this year,” said Sandy Cindrich, Penn Brewery’s CEO. Cindrich expects over 10,000 guests this year.
Festgoers will enjoy many attractions:
- Seven varieties of fresh Penn beer on draft, including Oktoberfest, Gold, Pilsner, Dark, Weizen, Kaiser Pils, and one Penn Ale;
- Traditional German dishes including bratwurst, sauerkraut, hot German potato salad, and soft pretzels, as well as some American-style items – vegetarian sloppy joes, pulled pork sandwiches, and hot apple cobbler;
- Live entertainment (full schedule below) from:
– The Autobahn Band, specializing in German/Bavarian music;
– Heimat Klang, a veteran of many Penn Brewery Oktoberfests;
– Kevin Solecki, a Grammy-nominated strolling accordionist;
– Madel Jager (formerly Gaudi Buam);
- Souvenir tent with beer mugs, alpine hats, t-shirts, light-up “Heidi braids” and more;
- Free parking and no cover charge. Penn has reserved extra parking this year. In addition to the gravel lot across the street from Penn, free parking is also available at Sara Heinz House (after 7 pm), Schiller Academy, and North Catholic High School. There is also reserved space in the large lot at the end of the 16th St. Bridge, between Chestnut St. and South Canal St. (lot closes at midnight).
For those planning their own Oktoberfest celebration this year, Penn is also accepting orders for pickup.
Penn Brewery, opened in 1986, is Pittsburgh’s oldest and largest brewery. Penn specializes in award-winning German-style craft beers, and serves traditional “Euro-Pittsburgh” fare including wurst, schnitzel, pierogi, and goulash, in its restaurant. The Brewery is located in Deutschtown on Pittsburgh’s North Side, in the mid nineteenth-century landmark E&O Brewery Building.
