WESTMORELAND CULTURAL TRUST RECEIVES $350,000 GRANT FROM THE RICHARD KING MELLON FOUNDATION TO STRENGTHEN ARTS AND CULTURAL INITIATIVES

Funding Will Advance Strategic Plan, Help Launch Education and Engagement Program, and Bolster Regional Economic and Tourism Growth Ahead of Theatre’s Centennial

GREENSBURG, PA, May 19, 2025 (PittsburghNewsWire.com) — Westmoreland Cultural Trust, a Greensburg, PA-based 501(c)(3) organization and the largest arts and cultural nonprofit in Westmoreland County and the Laurel Highlands Region, has been awarded a $350,000 grant from the Richard King Mellon Foundation to support its organizational operations and advance key initiatives outlined in its recently unveiled 3-Year Strategic Plan (2025–2027). This funding arrives at a pivotal moment as the Trust prepares to celebrate the 100-year Centennial Anniversary of The Historic Palace Theatre in 2026.

The grant will support efforts to enhance the patron experience, launch a new Education and Engagement program, and attract more large-budget performances to the region. These efforts are designed to boost ticket sales by at least five percent and increase tourism throughout Westmoreland County and the greater Laurel Highlands region.

“This investment from the Richard King Mellon Foundation allows us to strengthen our operational foundation while creating meaningful cultural experiences that benefit our entire community,” said Benjamin Luczak, CEO of Westmoreland Cultural Trust. “As we approach our centennial celebration in 2026, we are doubling down on our commitment to expand access to the arts, support economic development, and foster the next generation of arts patrons and leaders.”

The grant comes at a critical time for performing arts organizations across the country, many of which are still recovering from the lingering effects of the pandemic. Challenges such as declining attendance, rising operational costs, and shifting audience demographics have forced many arts nonprofits to rethink their long-term strategies. The Richard King Mellon Foundation continues to support organizations that are actively addressing these issues through innovation and long-term planning.

Westmoreland Cultural Trust’s 3-Year Strategic Plan outlines a bold roadmap for growth across its properties and programs, including The Palace Theatre and Greensburg Garden & Civic Center. Complementing this strategic vision is a recently conducted economic impact study showing that the Trust generates $12.88 million annually in local economic impact and supports nearly 700 jobs—figures that underscore the importance of sustained investment in cultural infrastructure.
