SUPERHEROES COME OUT TO FIGHT CHILDHOOD CANCER

Everyone’s a Superhero on Sunday at Bethel Park High School!

PITTSBURGH, PA, September 12, 2025 (PittsburghNewsWire.com) — The Joey Fabus Childhood Cancer Foundation will host the annual JFCCF 5K and 1 Mile Walk on September 14, 2025, at Bethel Park High School, with television’s Kym Gable as the event emcee.  This special event marks the 10th anniversary of the popular race, honoring ambassadors Jett Owsley of Mt. Lebanon and Sam Levine of Upper St. Clair.  It will also serve as a remembrance of the 2023 ambassador, Hazel Brown, from Port Clinton, Ohio, who also bravely fought DIPG, Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma.

Joey Fabus was an 8-year-old boy when he was diagnosed with the inoperable brain tumor in May, 2014.  The current survival rate is 0%.  Most children afflicted with this disease die within 9-12 months of diagnosis.  Joey loved superheroes and law enforcement officials.  During his short but brave battle, he was sworn in as an honorary Bethel Park Police Officer and spent many of his days ‘patrolling’ his Bethel Park community alongside his fellow men and women in blue.  On January 21, 2015, after one of the largest funeral processions in the history of the South Hills, he was laid to rest in his police uniform.

Current treatment options for DIPG have not been successful and more research is desperately needed.   The JFCCF was started in honor of Joey to let the world know what an amazing boy he was, to raise awareness, and to raise funds to be donated to research facilities throughout the world in hopes that a cure will be found.  Funding also supports families whose children have passed or are afflicted with the disease.

The race and walk on Sunday starts at 8:30, with the start and finish line in the athletic parking lot at Bethel Park High School, adjacent to the football stadium. The foundation will be selling JoeyStrong T-shirts.  There will be carnival games and prizes, food and drinks, and music by DJ Scar.  To sign up for the race or to donate, visit www.jfccf.org/5k-run-walk-over-dipg-.html
