Pittsburgh Navy League Celebrate the Navy’s 250th Birthday!
The steel forged here helped build the ships that won wars. During World War II, Neville Island was home to the construction of the Landing Ship, Tank (LST), a vessel critical to Allied operations. Pittsburgh’s contributions didn’t stop there—local industries helped pioneer nuclear power for naval use, including the USS Nautilus, the Navy’s first nuclear-powered submarine.
Today, Pittsburgh continues to support the Navy through advanced manufacturing and technology, supplying key components for modern ships. The city’s commitment to service is also reflected in its people.
Pittsburghers have proudly served in the Navy for generations, and the city hosts vital Navy operations including the Navy Reserve Center (established in 1947), Navy Recruiting offices and the Navy ROTC program at Carnegie Mellon University, founded in 1987.
And the legacy lives on. The fifth Navy ship to bear the name USS Pittsburgh, LPD-31, is currently under construction at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi.
