Onyx Woman Magazine Celebrates the Images of Success

Pittsburgh, PA (PittsburghNewsWire.com) — On Saturday, June 27, 2009, The Onyx Woman Network will honor five outstanding women who have shown courage, mentorship and leadership in the areas of entrepreneurship, education and community outreach. The awards will be presented during a luncheon at The Becoming Conference, an event that will address the many concerns and challenges facing women of color as they “Become,” – our term for entering the next phase of life. These trailblazing African American women have made a significant difference in the communities they serve in a way that sets an example for other women around the world.

These distinguished women are:

2009 Entrepreneur of the Year – Arlinda Moriarty
In just nine years as President and CEO of Moriarty Consultants, Moriarty has developed a small home health care business into a $10 million dollar full-service organization that serves over 30 counties in Pennsylvania and Georgia. Challenged by a disability, her support of staff training and continuing education has made her business model a strong force for home health care that supports community reinvestment and compassionate care-giving.

2009 Business Woman of the Year – Daria C. Crawley, Ph.D.
As Assistant Professor of Management at Robert Morris University School of Business, Dr. Crawley is an expert in organizational psychology and business management. She has also staunchly advocated for wider access to business management education and published scholarly work exploring the challenges that women face as academics and entrepreneurs.

2009 Women of Courage:

Dr. Marilyn Barnett
Dr. Barnett is Principal of Imani Christian Academy, a charter school in Pittsburgh, PA. Working as an administrator and an advocate holding the post of Vice President of the Urban League Charter School, Dr. Barnett has worked relentlessly to address the overlooked needs of marginalized students.

Wanda Henderson
Ms. Henderson is a founding member of Advocates for African American Students in Pittsburgh Public Schools, an organization that works to involve under-served communities in curriculum development to improve academic performance by African American students in Pittsburgh public schools.

2009 Special Lifetime Achievement Award in Business – Ruth Byrd-Smith
Ms. Byrd-Smith is Director of the Allegheny County Minority, Women, and Disadvantaged Business Enterprise.  Ruth was the principal of Ruth Byrd-Smith Consulting before she was appointed to her current position in 2004.

The awards ceremony will honor these women’s accomplishments in celebration of work that exemplifies the supportive, entrepreneurial and ambitious spirits they bring to the business world. The luncheon will take place from 12pm-2pm at the Regional Enterprise Towers in Pittsburgh, PA.  For more information, visit www.iambecoming.info or contact us at conference@onyxwomannetwork.com or 412-731-5159.
