BROWNSVILLE AREA HIGH SCHOOL WINS END-OF-YEAR CELEBRATION TO REPRESENT PITTSBURGH AT NATIONAL YOUTH SUMMIT AT HOWARD UNIVERSITY
“Students In Action” Honored for Their Leadership in Service
PITTSBURGH, PA, April 20, 2023 (PittsburghNewsWire.com) — Multiplying Good, the nation’s leading nonprofit focused on fueling personal growth and leadership through public service, is proud to announce that Brownsville Area High School from Brownsville, Pennsylvania has been selected as the Pittsburgh Regional Winner for Outstanding Service and will represent the Southwestern Pennsylvania region at Multiplying Good’s prestigious National Youth Summit in Washington D.C. at Howard University June 20–23, 2023.
On Friday, April 14, 2023, 8 local Students In Action teams from across South Western Pennsylvania gathered for End-of-Year Celebration to present live to a panel of community judges including Ellen Rossi from EQT Foundation, Bethany Hemingway from Staunton Farm Foundation, Tracey Armant from The Grable Foundation, and Edwin De La Rosa from Point Park University. In addition to completing a written reflection prior to the event, each Students In Action team had 8 minutes to present their service projects, reflect on their impact, and recognize and celebrate their achievements, as well as their peers, while earning the following awards:
- Brownsville Area High School: Gold Banner, Most Outstanding SIA Team (Regional Winner)
- Fort Cherry Junior/Senior High School: Silver Banner, Outstanding Sustainability Award
- Norwin High School: Gold Banner, Student Choice Award
- Perry High School PPS: Silver Banner, Rookie of the Year Award
- Pittsburgh Hardball Academy: Silver Banner, Outstanding Impact Award
- The Neighborhood Academy: Gold Banner, Pittsburgh’s Wildcard Nominee for Youth Summit
- Trinity High School: Gold Banner, Meaningful Reflection Award
- West Allegheny High School: Silver Banner, Outstanding Community Partnerships Award
The 2023 Pittsburgh Regional Winner of End-of-Year Celebration, Brownsville Area High School, built upon their peer mentoring program, Falcon Friends, that connects high school students to 6th graders to talk about mental health, by introducing Snack Packs – a program that provides non-perishable food, hygiene products, and items to foster social/emotional learning to any middle school student in need to nourish and sustain them through each weekend until the next school week and peer mentoring session.
Throughout the course of the 2022-23 school year – Brownsville Students In Action engaged nearly 100 non-SIA volunteers and impacted 400 people through their service.
“Our Falcon Friends and Snack Packs programs will keep growing due to the ongoing need for basic necessities in our area. By providing nutritious food, hygiene products, and mental health enrichment during school, and now over the weekend, our students are having their needs met consistently and sustainably, which contributes to the health of the whole person.”
Congratulations to Brownsville Students In Action, and all of the participating teams, for sharing your stories of service to impact and inspire others, creating a ripple effect and MULTIPLYING GOOD in your communities!
