SOUNDS OF PITTSBURGH CHORUS CELEBRATING  50 YEARS AS A CHAPTER OF SWEET ADELINES INTERNATIONAL

PITTSBURGH, PA, Sept 23, 2024 (PittsburghNewsWire.com) — Sweet Adelines International is the world’s largest organization devoted to women’s music education and to the maintenance of the uniquely American art form of Barbershop Harmony.  With membership of more than 23,000 women, all singing in English in four-part a cappella harmony, Sweet Adelines International includes choruses in most of the fifty United States as well as in Australia, Canada, England, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Scotland, Sweden and Wales. These chapters compete annually at a regional level, and the 35 regional winners go on to compete at the International Convention.

Sounds of Pittsburgh Chorus started out in early 1974 as Beaver Valley Chapter when the first rehearsal was held at Christ Episcopal Church, New Brighton, PA.  The group was co-founded by Bette Carothers and Lorida Harvey, members of the Heathertones quartet, 1963 Queen of Harmony International champions. Beaver Valley Chapter officially became one of the 600 choruses in Sweet Adelines International on December 19, 1974.  In 1990, another established chapter, Golden Triangle Chorus, in Pittsburgh, opted to dissolve their charter and join forces with Beaver Valley Chorus under the name Golden Valley. The name “Sounds of Pittsburgh Chorus” was later chosen to better represent our city.
Sounds of Pittsburgh Chorus has medaled at both regional and international competitions and performed at many local events and venues, including First Night, Three Rivers Arts Festival, PNC Park, the Pittsburgh Regatta, and the Women Who Rock benefit concert featuring Sheila E.  Throughout its 50 years,  this high-performing chorus has drawn members from the tristate area, and continues to bring the joy of a cappella and ringing chords of Barbershop Harmony in all types of music to audiences in the region.
Sounds of Pittsburgh Chorus welcomes women who sing to join them at rehearsals on Monday evenings at Sharon Community Presbyterian Church, 522 Carnot Road, Moon Township PA 15108.
In honor of this 50th anniversary, Mayor Ed Gainey has issued a proclamation declaring Sounds of Pittsburgh Chorus as the Official Sweet Adelines Chorus of the City of Pittsburgh.  Sounds of Pittsburgh is also featured on the WQED-FM Voice of the Arts podcast at https://www.wqed.org/podcasts/sounds-of-pittsburgh-chorus-50th-anniversary/
To celebrate Sounds of Pittsburgh’s 50th year, the chorus will be holding an anniversary luncheon and concert on September 28, 2024 at the Greater Pittsburgh Masonic Hall, 3579 Masonic Way, Pittsburgh, PA 15237.  Join us as we travel back through the years to celebrate our chorus and its history in Pittsburgh.  This event will feature Sounds of Pittsburgh Chorus and a special performance by the Sweet Adelines International 2018 Queens of Harmony, Quartet champion, Lustre. https://www.lustrequartet.com/.  The emcee will be Mary Ours of KDKA TV.
