IT’S RAINING SPRING SEASONAL BEERS AT PENN BREWERY

Pittsburgh, PA (PittsburghNewsWire.com) —  Penn Brewery is pleased to announce the launch of two new spring beers: a Mandarin orange American pale ale brewed especially for Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week, and Berliner Weisse, a classic German style.“Penn has teamed up with the brewers at Fat Head’s Brewery to create new Alpha MANdarin ale for Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week, kicking off April 25,” said Andy Rich, head brewer for Penn. Alpha MANdarin is a “hopped up” American Style Strong Pale Ale brewed with copious quantities of Centennial hops in the mash and the boil, along with whole leaf hops and 30 lbs of Mandarin orange zest & fruit added to the whirlpool to enhance the citrus notes of the hops. The result, according to Rich, is “an enjoyable, citrusy pale ale with 6.5% ABV.”  Alpha MANdarin will be available on draft while supplies last.

Penn Berliner Weisse marks Penn Brewery’s first foray into the sour beer category. A regional specialty of Berlin, “Berliner Weisse is a very pale, sour, refreshing, low-alcohol wheat ale that was referred to by Napoleon’s troops in 1809 as ‘the Champagne of the North’ due to its lively and elegant character,” said Nick Rosich, assistant brewer at Penn.  In Germany, the style is classified as a Schankbier, denoting a small beer of starting gravity in the range 7-8°P. Berliner Weisse is often served with an added shot of sugar syrup (mit Schuss) flavored with raspberry (Himbeer) or woodruff (Waldmeister), or even mixed with Pilsner to counter the substantial sourness. This German brew has been described by some as the most purely refreshing beer in the world. Penn’s rendition has 4.0% ABV and will be available on draft beginning in late April. Berliner Weisse pairs perfectly with salads, seafood, bright and lemony foods, cured meats, and bleu cheese.

Penn Berliner Weisse is part of Penn’s seasonal “Complete Wheat” lineup. In addition to this new variety, Penn is also featuring several other wheat styles this spring:

Penn Weizen: Penn’s classic unfiltered wheat ale made with two-row barley and white wheat.  This beer has pronounced notes of banana and clove, and an ABV of 5.25%.  Penn Weizen holds numerous accolades, including three Great American Beer Festival® medals and one World Beer Cup® title. Weizen is available on draft and in 12-oz. bottles through the end of summer.

Penn Dunkelweiss:  Dunkelweiss is a refreshing wheat beer much like Penn Weizen, but brewed with black malt and a touch of Munich malt, giving it a complex mix from the esters of the Weizen yeast and the roasty notes of the malt.  Dark in color, the beer has an ABV of 5.3%.  Dunkelweiss pairs perfectly with sausages, pâté, roasted meats, root vegetables, Chinese stir fry, and Cajun foods. Available on draft in mid-April.

Weizenbock: Penn’s wheat bock beer with 8.5% ABV will be available on draft at the end of April. Weizenbock is a big-bodied, stronger, darker, maltier version of our Penn Weizen.  This beautiful dark-ruby colored beer holds a silver World Beer Cup® medal.

Finally, with May not far off, Penn is also bringing back one more spring classic, the über-malty Penndemonium Maibock. Penndemonium contains 7% ABV and will be available in 22-oz. bottles and on draft the first week in May.

Penn Brewery, opened in 1986, is Pittsburgh’s oldest and largest brewery. It specializes in award-winning German-style craft beers sold in Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio,  Maryland, Virginia, and Florida.  The Brewery is located in Deutschtown on Pittsburgh’s North Side, in the mid nineteenth-century landmark E&O Brewery Building.
