Mental Techniques Ease Worries and Fears To Strengthen and Optimize Performance

Pittsburgh, PA (PittsburghNewsWire.com) – Butterflies and nerves help us perform better. Whether you are a dancer, lawyer or speaker, learning why the body revs up for performance can ease fears and worry.

“Performance nerves are generally misunderstood,”  says Sanna Carapellotti, MS, CHT, a nationally recognized Performance Specialist and Therapist. “The mind is conditioned to interpret the signals as anxiety and fear. We are taught young that if the heart is beating faster or the stomach is “fluttery” before a performance, we need to worry. A performer can learn to reinterpret “butterflies and nerves” to an advantage.”

Recently featured in the article, Bring On The Butterflies in the November 2008 issue of Dance Studio Life Magazine, Ms. Carapellotti discusses performance stress.

“When performers discover what is really happening in the body, they are surprised and relieved,” says Carapellotti. The body naturally prepares in many ways to dance, present or speak.

“A “fluttery” feeling in the stomach, known as butterflies, is an increase in digestive acids for emptying the stomach. You can’t dance or tumble with food digesting in your middle.”

As an expert who works with professionals and artistic performers at www.MentalPerformances.com, Ms. Carapellotti adds that being told to relax before performance can also compromise effort and is in direct conflict with what the body is doing. “Relax after the performance. You need the excitement higher energy offers to perform your best.”

Not understanding performance is one reason many artists struggle with self-expression and give up their dreams.  Performance is an experience, more than an act or presentation.

“My services are a resource for individuals looking to improve their performance experience,” says Ms. Carapellotti.  “I assist with issues ranging from fears, enhancement strategies and personal challenges. It is imperative to learn tools to manage your mind and emotions. Some individuals require small adjustments, while others need a more attentive approach.”

Mental training, coaching and therapeutic strategies can enrich anyone’s performance.
