29TH ANNUAL CHARLIE HOGAN MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT KICKS-OFF THIS WEEKEND

INDIANA, PA, January 6, 2024 (PittsburghNewsWire.com) — It’s a big weekend for youth hockey in Indiana, PA.  A total of 19 youth hockey teams, will come together to compete in the 29th annual Charlie Hogan Memorial Tournament.  Players will range from 9 to 14 years of age.  The man hours put into planning and coordinating this large of an event is extraordinary and it’s all handled by volunteers.  Tournament Director, Matt Jackson and Co-Director, Erin Jones, both Indiana Youth Hockey Association (IYHA) board members, lead the efforts that bring together parent volunteers and community support to make it all possible.

This tournament is held in honor of Charlie Hogan, a beloved young hockey player who died unexpectedly in 1994.  Charlie’s red #18 Chiefs jersey is retired and proudly displayed at the S&T Bank Arena, home of the Indiana Chiefs.

The tournament generates the funds to allow the IYHA organization to ensure their player fees can stay at a reasonable rate.  This encourages players and families to participate for the love of the game, like Charlie did.  This tournament was started by Don and Claire Hogan in memory of their son, and still today, they enjoy seeing their son’s memory honored with this tournament each year. Additionally, Charlie’s brothers, Luke and Steve, are now youth hockey coaches and bring their teams to participate in this event, in memory of their brother. Luke, now lives in Louisville, KY but brings his whole team of youth hockey players from Louisville to Indiana, PA.  No small feat, but we are so honored that he and the players and families make the trip.

If your team is playing in the tournament, or you just love a good game of hockey, please come out this weekend to support the tournament.  With 34 games played over the course of the weekend, you are sure to find at least one to fit your schedule. There are bound to be stories to tell and memories to make for this collection of young players.  S&T Arena and the IYHA are excited to welcome so many players and families to the rink and community they call home.
