The Fall That Tops’em All! Festival’s One-Ton Pumpkin Drops Create The ‘Burgh’s Biggest Autumn Splash Every Year

PITTSBURGH, PA, September 28, 2026 (PittsburghNewsWire.com) — No matter how many times you see it, the anticipation, expectation and jubilation of seeing a 2,000+ pound pumpkin free fall 200+ feet sends shivers down the spine.

For nine years now, the all free PittsburghMonster Pumpkins Festival, presented by Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine [LECOM] and the City’s signature Fall event, has electrified tens of thousands of spectators from across the country who gather to witness what has become one of the region’s most anticipated traditions for this time of year.

“Since the festival’s inception, the drop has risen to storied proportions topping off at the current world-record,230-foot dive straight down set during our 2024 event. That one shook surrounding buildings on impact and embellished giant pumpkin lore forever,” says Michael Dongilli, event producer.

This year’s festival happens Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 17-18, in the Stacks Courtyard—­part of the 3 Crossings campus in the Strip District on Railroad Street and if you miss the first drop, relax…the spectacle repeats throughout the weekend [twice each day].

Across the country, Pittsburgh’s behemoth pumpkin patch has become the premier place for giant pumpkin trips and tales…as one-ton cucurbits—carved, exhibited, dropped, painted and pulled—are scattered a full City block to create a fantasy land of titanic squash props and gargantuan gourds.

Wait, pulled? “We strap a 1,500-pounder onto a two-wheel cart, attach a bull rope and challenge spectators to pull it slightly uphill nearly 60 feet…fastest time wins some nice prizes and the line to try is almost endless each day,” explains Dongilli.

Can’t pull’em, how about slinging’em? The event’s Squash Sling is exactly as it sounds—insert pumpkin, aim, pull, release and watch that thing in one funny fling.

Drop, pull, sling…but the most amazing thing just may be what the carvers bring—three of the country’s top giant pumpkin artists compete in an all-out challenge of skill, talent and fruit—sculpting prowess called the LECOM Gourd Games. Carvers get two days to complete their masterpieces within the theme–Out of This World. A team of celebrity judges, along with online spectator voting, determines a winner and, if past events are any indication, the sculptures created become some of the most impressive pieces of temporary art in the world…towering over 10 feet tall and detailed to perfection.
