WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA DIAPER BANK’S GROWING NEED EXPLAINED

National Diaper Bank Network Releases New Information on Diaper Insecurity

PITTSBURGH, PA, June 28, 2023 (PittsburghNewsWire.com) — Western Pennsylvania Diaper Bank (WPADB) is sharing the National Diaper Bank Network’s (NDBN) 2023 Diaper Check preliminary findings. New and alarming statistics found by the NDBN show that nearly half (47%) of U.S. families with young children experience diaper need. This increase to 1 in 2 families, from 1 in 3 families cited since 2010, is being addressed by WPADB.

“We know that families in Allegheny, Westmoreland and the surrounding counties we serve experience diaper need,” Cathy Battle, Executive Director of WPADB, stated. “We have been creating solutions for these families for a decade. Now that the newest statistics have been released, we want to make a call to action to our partners and to the public. We need diapers to help these families.”

The report goes on to share these statistics:
  • Diaper need impacts 47% of U.S. families with young children and forces 46% of these families to cut back on essentials including food and utilities.
  • Diaper need impacts hunger: 28% percent of parents struggling with diaper need report skipping meals to afford diapers.

WPADB is calling out to the communities in the Pittsburgh region to help fulfill their need for larger sized diapers (sizes 4 through 6) and pull-ups. Battle is hoping that by sharing these statistics corporations, organizations, and individuals will host diaper drives.

Most diaper drives receive a lot of smaller sizes, when the organization is continually in need of larger sizes. “The demand for larger sizes of diapers has gone up,” she stated. “These items cost more because you get fewer per pack.”

WPADB provides around 200,000 diapers per month to families in need. They believe that since federal funding is being piloted it demonstrates the need for diapers across the nation. Information on hosting a diaper drive can be found at https://www.wpadiaperbank.org/host-a-diaper-drive.

The Western Pennsylvania Diaper Bank is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. They are a member of the National Diaper Bank Network.
