) — Veteran rockers SOURMASH wrapped up a successful return by winning three awards in the 2024 Pittsburgh Music Awards. Last month, the Iron City Rocks’ Pittsburgh Music Awards list of finalists was announced, in which Sourmash received a total of seven nominations in both group and individual categories. The act won for Best Rock Band, while Sourmash frontman Tim Henry won for both Best Vocalist and the “Pete Rossi” Best Guitarist. Aside from being previous winners in multiple categories in the Pittsburgh Music Awards, Sourmash recently gained international attention by winning at the Josie Music Awards in Nashville – including 2021 Entertainer of the Year; 2022 Duo/Group of the Year; and 2022 Vocalist of the Year awards. The Josie Music Awards is the world’s largest awards organization that recognizes independent artists.
The act returned to the stage in March 2024 after 17 months away while the band’s vocalist recovered from complications following surgery in 2022. During one of the busiest years in Sourmash history, Henry began encountering breathing issues while singing in the Spring of 2022. After some tests and doctor visits, two large thyroid tumors had dislocated and constricted his larynx. The vocalist adjusted technique to manage performances so that the band could complete the grueling schedule without missing a show. In November of that year (only three weeks after winning JMA Vocalist of the Year), surgery was performed to remove the thyroid. However, the procedure resulted in major trauma to the vocal cord nerves, leaving a very limited ability to speak and the inability to sing. What was initially to be a 3 – 5 day recovery period, turned into weeks and then months. The expectation to fully heal finally settled at a year after the surgery.
Throughout 2023, Sourmash was unable to perform live while Henry recovered and went through extensive voice therapy. Work in the studio continued and the band released the single, Bluezin’ in April 2023. By the end of 2023, he was given the green light to start singing again. Sourmash returned to live performances early in 2024 and released their most recent single (JMA Nominated) Die For You in April 2024. Also during that time, 2023 JMA Song of the Year nominee Bluezin’ spent 11 weeks on the Hit Tracks Top 100 charts in Europe, with 3 weeks in the Top 10 and peaking at #9. The song ultimately was listed in the Hit Tracks Top 100 Songs of 2024.
Sourmash consists of members: Tim Henry (vocalist, guitarist), Dave Stanoszek (bassist), and Brian Forsha (drummer). Sourmash music has found its way across the globe in both film and television; streaming in 84 countries; and nationally on SiriusXM and AMI & TouchTunes jukeboxes. Sourmash is currently working on new material with the release of a new single and album expected in 2025. The act has performed at numerous festivals and motorcycle rallies and has shared the stage with the likes of Blackberry Smoke, Luke Combs, Great White, Saliva, Jackyl, David Allen Coe, Molly Hatchet, Blackfoot and more.
