Originally built as condominiums in the 1950s, the property received a complete overhaul to the all of the public areas as well as private suites. A new conference center was created with a large meeting room to accommodate up to 40 in multiple configurations, as well as a smaller board/ break-out room perfect for 10-12. The areas are connected by a full kitchen available for use by meeting attendees.
Each unit received new hardwood flooring, an energy-efficient dual zone HVAC unit, and state-of-the art electronics including a large flat screen HD television and high-speed wireless internet. New beds, bed linens, window treatments, area rugs, ceiling fans, and contemporary artwork were added to create a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. “It’s not your average hotel, it’s better. The rooms were exceptionally large and had nice furniture and hardwood floors. It felt more like I was staying in my apartment than a hotel room,” commented one guest on TripAdvisor.
With one- and two-bedroom suites, studios and mansion suites, the Shadyside Inn includes all of the standard services available at larger hotel chains including concierge, shuttle and room service but also has many additional amenities including free parking, free bikes, and the hotel is pet-friendly. With a complete kitchen with service for four, dining table, and living area, the hotel can accommodate families and single guests comfortably for long-term stays or one-night stopovers. Set in a private neighborhood atmosphere amidst park-like grounds, the Shadyside Inn Suites is only a block away from Walnut Street with upscale shops, a variety of top restaurants, a grocery store, and gym available for use by guests.
The Shadyside Inn became an extended stay facility in the mid 1980s servicing the guests of the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University, major corporations, executive training programs, and nearby medical centers. Their exclusive guest lists boasts a clientele including the cast and crew of several movies including The Silence of the Lambs, Diabolique, and the new release Foxcatcher, as well as NFL coaches, elected officials, and renowned photographers, costume designers, and many more.
“Everything we have done is a by-product of customer feedback,” said President Jonathan Plesset, the third generation in his family to manage the property. “This is a hotel built by our customers.” Although the major components of this renovation are complete, they will continue to improve the properties, with additional upgrades including keyless entry planned for later this year. The Shadyside Inn Suites has two multi-unit buildings on Fifth Avenue, one on South Negley Avenue, and 12 luxury mansion suites located throughout the Shadyside area.
